The Union government in India has granted sanctions to prosecute 21 social networking sites which include Facebook and Google. It was seen as a “blatant effort to coerce social media companies to carry out self-censorship.”

The Indian government has claimed that there is enough evidence to proceed with prosecution. Offences include promoting hostility between different groups of people in India and that these acts were “prejudicial to the maintenance of harmony” as well as “prejudicial to national integration.”

Free speech is guaranteed in India through its Constitution however it must be within the bounds of several criteria: public order, decency, security of the state, must not promote obscenity, contempt of court, incitement to offence, defamation, or any activity that questions the sovereignty and integrity of India and may possibly reduce friendly relations of India to other states.

But even with these efforts, experts believe that it can be impossible to sanction the Internet let alone social networking sites like Google and Facebook. These are merely networking platforms that people use to connect with each other people and misuse is often the result.

But then again, some agree that self-censorship must be carried actively by social media companies. This move of course is not new. Way back December 2011, the Indian government thought of ways to censor the Internet; then acting communications minister Kapil Sibal met with officials from Google, Yahoo, Facebook and Microsoft to impose self censorship.

In October 2009, the Indian government passed a law that requires web company executive to comply with take-down request from the government. Failure to comply will be dealt with a fine and seven years of imprisonment. Other rules from Sibal’s ministry were released in April of that year and it was all about web companies to delete their content that politician and citizens object to within 36 hours.

A sci-fi refrigerator can probably help you go on a diet. This amazing refrigerator scans every item that you place in and then tells you which food you should avoid when you are in a diet.

Aside from telling you what not to eat, it can also give you healthy food choices based on its inventory. A disembodied voice tells you to put down unhealthy foods and suggests healthier options. How is all this possible? Users program their body mass index or BMI on the appliance as well as the person’s weight loss targets. The refrigerator has a smart TV and a voice recognition software which easily recognizes the person who will open the door.

As the smart refrigerator recognizes your identity, it accesses your details and makes use of these to create better and healthier food options. It even offers meal suggestions and recipes which are also based on its inventory of healthier foods.

This amazing smart refrigerator is from LG and it is a part of their LG ThinQ smart appliance series. Aside from helping you stick to your diet plan and recommend meals and recipes, this refrigerator features a blast chiller that can chill drinks fast. Large wine bottles can be chilled in just 8 minutes while an average sized soda can in just 5 minutes. This refrigerator also features in internal camera that allows you to view the inside the refrigerator through your smartphone. Finally, this smart appliance can also send you a text message when an item inside is headed for its expiration date.

The ThinQ Smart refrigerator from LG costs $3,000. This breakthrough technology from LG promises to bring smart appliances to homes in the future. Along with the smart refrigerator is the smart oven which is also from LG.

There were several frustrated Windows 8 enthusiasts at the Consumer Electronic Show 2012 at Las Vegas, Nevada and this frustration was due to a touch-based interface that were not allowed to be touched at all. The much-awaited Microsoft Windows 8 operating system was shown in several prototype ARM-based tablets but no one was allowed to even touch the gadgets.

Famous brands like Nvidia had three tablets all running with Windows 8 OS but were all encased in glass. Texas Instruments proudly showed a tablet that ran on the same operating system in a meeting room off the show floor but reporters were not permitted to try it out. Another vendor of ARM chips is Qualcomm which is also working with Windows 8 but were not presenting their gadgets at all.

All three companies said that Microsoft has placed limits on how they can present Windows 8 on ARM. They are just protecting their product and are not taking chances for consumers to have a bad experience with the software before its release; they believe that allowing consumers to try it out may harm its reputation at an early stage.

Microsoft demonstrated Windows 8’s first code using an ARM chip last year at CES. Windows 8 however, isn’t expected to be released until the late part of 2012. Microsoft gave out Windows 8 test units that ran on x86 processors to reviewers in September 2011; a reporter was allowed to try out the x86 systems with the OS in its booth in the CES.

Director of communications for Microsoft Chris Flores explained that development of the Windows 8 ARM version is on track and it is expected to be released commercially at the same time as the x86 system. Microsoft still had no word if Windows 8 beta, which is due in February, will come out in both platforms.

Smarter and more efficient home appliances were unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show 2012 in Las Vegas. Imagine all your home gadgets talking to each other wirelessly or how about controlling all your home appliances with an application from your smartphone?

There were a lot of “smart” appliances that were featured at the CES 2012. Refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, stoves and even a robotic vacuum were all accessible with an app; all you need to do is just make simple clicks on your phone and all the complicated household chores are done automatically.

Here is LG’s vision of a home of the future filled with smart appliances:

1.	A smart refrigerator was unveiled by LG as a part of their Smart ThinQ appliances line. This refrigerator can scan grocery receipts directly from a smartphone camera then keeps track of the item inside. With the inventory, it can recommend recipes that you can cook.

2.	Your smart refrigerator can communicate with your smart oven to automatically preheat. This Smart Oven can cook food 20% faster than regular stoves since it is equipped with an infrared grill technology. This oven is so smart it can remind you what temperature it has to make sure your pie or cake won’t overcook or burn.

3.	The fastest chiller is also from LG and it is built into LG’s refrigerator models. In just a matter of 4 minutes it can chill a 12 ounce canned drink and can chill a bottle of wine in just 8 minutes.

4.	The HOM-Bot robotic vacuum is a very intelligent cleaning aid that can map out your entire house. It is built with three cameras, a speaker system and can be completely controlled by an app on your smartphone. Furthermore, this smart vacuum can return to its charging dock when it is about to run out of batteries. It knows that exact location it has left before it went back for a charge and continues cleaning once more.

5.	The smartest washer and dryer in the planet is also at LG that can alert you when your laundry is done to transfer them to the dryer section.

6.	The Tromm Styler is a “freshener” machine that gently rocks hanging clothes to make it clean, pressed-looking and wrinkle-free. This machine can also freshen up toys and stuffed animals. This LG concept clothes manager is already available for sale in Korea for $2,000.00.

The much coveted title “best gadget” at the Consumer Electronics Show 2012 at Las Vegas, Nevada was given to a razor-thin television from LG. Many attendees agreed that it was the clear winner in the annual trade show.

The 140 cm television set from LG uses the new OLED technology or organic light-emitting diode technology. The OLED is deemed better, brighter and consumes less power than LED or LCD since it uses no backlighting. The panel also has better color contrast and better picture detail as compared to standard television models.

Experts from CNET also gave awards to the LG55EM9800 as the “Best TV” and “Best of Show” at the CES 2012. When CNET experts were asked why it favored the LG55EM9800 over the Samsung OLED TV, they said that LG had an actual shipping date compared to the Samsung. The LG TV will be released at the third quarter of 2012.

CNET, a premier site of tech product reviews, product comparisons and news also gave several awards for other categories at the CES 2012. The “Best Cell Phone” was awarded to the Nokia Lumia 900 which runs on Microsoft Windows 7 operating system. With a brilliant screen display and a powerful camera, it was the clear winner over other new Windows Phones.

CNET also awarded “Best Camera” to Fujifilm X-Pro 1 with interchangeable lens rather than point-to-shoot cameras; it gave better picture quality, new sensor capabilities, color filter array and a new hybrid viewfinder.

There are other CNET categories that are certainly very interesting but the television category was far one of the most unexpected award considering both Samsung and LG had wonderful products to showcase. Many were surprised that the judges merely decided in a very small shipping date flaw.

The LG super thin television is expected to cost several thousand dollars which of course is not an affordable price for everyone. Of course, if OLED is indeed the future for power saving television screens replacing LED and LCD screens, then a price decrease will surely be at hand. See you at the next CES!

More than 20,000 products were showcased, over 3,200 exhibitors and an exhibition space of 0.17 million square meters are just some of the impressive numbers of the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show or CES. The trade show which ended last February 13, 2012 was deemed the largest technology and electronics fair by the organizers.

The noticeable absence of Apple was of course felt by many fans but many amazing brands shone each with their flagship products to present. There were several versions of ultrabooks, smartphones, tablets, smart TVs and many more. But even with Apple’s absence, there were over 300 companies that exhibited accessories for Apple products.

It was also noticeable that this year’s CES was all about super-thin ultrabooks. Ultrabook laptops are gadgets that may look like tablets but still retain portable’s standard performance. There were more than 30 types of ultrabooks that were unveiled by PC makers such as Hewlett-Packard, Acer, Lenovo, Samsung and many other popular brands.

As the event closed, awards were given by CNET, the official streaming media partner of CES 2012. Nokia Lumia 900 won as the best smartphone. This was a comeback for the mobile phone leader after it partnered with Microsoft to present a Windows Phone.

It was still apparent that the absence of Apple’s iPhone was still missed. Matthias Person, an exhibitor and chief executive of the German company iBolt exclaimed that iPhone was still clearly the most popular brand in the market. iBolt is a company that manufactures iPhone accessories like the iProdock which conveniently docks an iPhone on any type of casing. He further said that although there will be an increase in Android phones in the future, Apple will continue to be the leader in this technology.

Other winners in this year’s CES were LG for their razor-sharp OLED 55-inch television; the best camera was given to the Fujifilm X-Pro1, the best tablet for the Asus Memo 370T and many more exciting and promising gadgets.

ARM Holdings plc, Warren East, shrugged off Intel Corps latest attempt to use low-power processors for smartphones and tablets. The ARM CEO mentions at the Consumer Electronics Show 2012 at Las Vegas, Nevada that “It’s inevitable Intel will get a few smartphone design wins – we regard Intel as a serious competitor.” He adds “Are they ever going to be the leaders in power efficiency? No, of course not. But they have a lot more to offer.”

East has also added that the latest attempt of Intel was just “good enough” but not as good and as competitive as ARM’s chips designs. He commented that Intel merely took some designs which were never meant for mobile phones, made some changes and placed them in to power-performance space which is just “good enough” for mobile phones.

While East made his comments on Intel’s chip designs, Intel on the other hand, has announced its entrance to the smartphone and tablet chip race earlier at the CES 2012. Intel has plans to use its new “Medfield” chip for new Motorola Mobility and Lenovo phones using Google’s Android OS.

East however was confident that ARM’s new Cortex A7 design will continue to be the leader with a 20% power consumption capability. He was also happy with seeing Microsoft Corp. using its new Windows 8 OS on their tablets using ARM chips considering Microsoft was Intel’s long time ally. Microsoft announced at the CES 2011 that it planned to make Windows 8 ARM compatible but there is no word yet on the release date of the new system.

There will surely be a rise of ARM powered tablets this year considering Windows 8 will soon be released. Consumers are just barely keeping up with the new tablet technology and with the innovations from ARM and Microsoft, there is a lot more to learn and of course to enjoy.

ARM controls a majority of the mobile and tablet market but East is still confident that they will endure despite strong efforts from Intel to penetrate the market share.
